A destination wedding from Brussels, a unique cave church in Marathokefala and a joyful next day session in Chania’s Venetian Harbour.

August 19, 2025 • Church of Saint John the Hermit Cave, Crete

Some weddings begin with a destination.

The most memorable ones become a journey.

Peggy and Konstantinos travelled from Brussels to Crete to celebrate their wedding surrounded by family, close friends and one of the island’s most remarkable churches.

Hidden beneath the cliffs of Marathokefala, the Cave of Saint John the Hermit is unlike any other wedding location in Crete. Carved into the rock and surrounded by centuries of history, it offers an atmosphere that feels peaceful, intimate and deeply connected to the landscape itself.

Their Orthodox ceremony reflected that same feeling. Nothing felt hurried or extravagant. The cave, the natural surroundings and the people who had travelled to share the day created an experience that felt authentic from beginning to end.

The celebration continued in the spacious courtyard beneath the church, where music, laughter and conversation filled the evening. But one particular moment quietly became unforgettable.

After Peggy and Konstantinos shared their first dance as husband and wife, the music continued. Peggy invited her father onto the dance floor, while Konstantinos turned to his mother-in-law. Together, the four of them danced a graceful waltz, moving as one across the floor while everyone watched with smiles, applause and more than a little emotion.

It lasted only a few minutes, yet it perfectly captured what the day truly represented—not simply the union of two people, but the coming together of two families.

Their story continued the following day in Chania’s Venetian Harbour. Walking through the narrow streets and towards the famous lighthouse, the atmosphere became completely different. Relaxed, unhurried and full of laughter.

By pure coincidence, they met the close friends who had travelled with them from Brussels. What had begun as a quiet portrait session quickly turned into one final celebration, filled with spontaneous photographs, genuine laughter and the kind of moments no one could ever plan.

Looking back, this wedding wasn’t remembered only for its remarkable location. It was remembered for the people who made every chapter of the story feel unforgettable.

The Story

From Brussels to Crete

Destination weddings are about far more than choosing a beautiful location.

They bring together families and friends from different places, creating an experience that often feels as much like a shared journey as it does a wedding day.

For Peggy and Konstantinos, travelling from Brussels to Crete allowed them to celebrate in a place that combined natural beauty, tradition and the relaxed atmosphere that makes the island so special.

A Ceremony Inside the Cave of Saint John the Hermit

Few wedding locations in Crete feel as unique as the Cave of Saint John the Hermit.

Hidden within the rock at Marathokefala, the church creates an atmosphere unlike a traditional village or city church. The surrounding cliffs, the natural stone and the quiet surroundings give every ceremony a sense of intimacy that is difficult to describe until you experience it in person.

As Peggy and Konstantinos exchanged their vows, it felt as though the landscape itself had become part of the ceremony.

A Dance Shared by Two Families

Every wedding has one moment that people continue talking about long after the celebration ends.

For Peggy and Konstantinos, it came immediately after their first dance.

Instead of inviting everyone onto the dance floor, the music continued for just a little longer.

Peggy’s father joined his daughter.

Konstantinos invited his mother-in-law.

Together, the four of them danced a beautiful waltz, slowly turning across the dance floor while family and friends watched with smiles, applause and quiet emotion.

It wasn’t planned as a performance.

It simply became one of those genuine moments that perfectly expressed what a wedding is really about.

Two families becoming one.

One More Day Together

The following day offered a completely different rhythm.

Without the schedule of a wedding, Peggy and Konstantinos wandered through Chania’s Venetian Harbour, enjoying the city at a slower pace before walking towards the iconic lighthouse.

The portrait session felt natural and relaxed, allowing them to enjoy one another’s company while exploring one of Crete’s most beautiful locations.

Towards the end of the session, they unexpectedly met the close friends who had travelled from Brussels for the wedding.

What followed wasn’t planned.

Friends joined the photographs, laughter echoed through the harbour and the session became one final celebration before everyone returned home.

Sometimes the most memorable photographs are the ones no one expected to take.
