September 2, 2025 • Chania Old Harbor, Crete
A surprise proposal beside Chania’s Old Harbor, planned around the lighthouse, discreet positioning and the movement of a busy public setting.
Kush wanted to propose to Medha during their time in Chania, with the lighthouse and the Old Venetian Harbor forming part of the setting.
Unlike a quiet beach, the harbor is an active public place. People are constantly walking along the waterfront and around the lighthouse, so the plan could not depend on having the area empty.
Before the proposal, Kush and I worked on the location and the way the moment would unfold. The aim was to give him a clear point to work toward while allowing the photography to remain discreet.
At a location like Chania Old Harbor, positioning matters as much as the scenery.
There are few places where a photographer can physically disappear, and trying to stay completely hidden can make it harder to photograph the reaction well. Instead, the photographer can remain part of the normal movement around the harbor while keeping enough distance from the couple.
Kush and Medha approached the lighthouse naturally, without turning the proposal into a staged photoshoot.
When Kush reached the right moment, he stopped with Medha and proposed.
After she said yes, we continued nearby with relaxed portraits, including photographs of the ring and the two of them together around the harbor and lighthouse.
Το scouting είναι μάλιστα ένα από τα λίγα planning στοιχεία που ενισχύεται και από το ίδιο το review του Kush: «he helped me scout for the perfect location».

Chania Old Harbor Lighthouse is one of the most romantic places in the city, especially during sunset, offering a unique atmosphere for a proposal in Crete.
Some couples who start with a proposal in Chania later choose to continue their story with an elopement in Crete.
From the approach toward the lighthouse and the proposal itself to Kush and Medha’s first portraits together around Chania Old Harbor.
Chania Old Harbor is very different from planning a proposal on a quiet beach.
The lighthouse and waterfront are public spaces, and during the busier months there can be people walking, sightseeing and taking photographs around the harbor throughout the evening.
That means complete privacy cannot be guaranteed.
It also means that trying to hide a photographer completely is often less useful than making the photographer look like another visitor in the area.
A discreet proposal here depends more on positioning and coordination. The couple needs a clear route and proposal point, while the photographer needs enough distance to remain unobtrusive without losing the reaction.
The background also needs to be considered. A lighthouse may be the reason for choosing the location, but the proposal does not necessarily need to happen directly underneath it. The position of the couple can be chosen so that the harbor or lighthouse remains part of the photographs without forcing the moment into the busiest point.
For couples who value absolute privacy, a quieter beach or more secluded setting may be a better choice. For couples who want the atmosphere and architecture of Chania itself, the Old Harbor can work very well when the public nature of the location is accepted as part of the plan.
“Panagiotis was absolutely incredible.
Not only did he help me scout for the perfect location, but he also went above and beyond in making the whole day special and capturing everything so perfectly.
Will be forever grateful and should highly, highly recommend working with him anytime!!”
— Kush Shah
Yes, especially for couples who want the architecture and atmosphere of Chania to be part of the experience. It is a public and often busy location, however, so privacy cannot be guaranteed.
Usually not in the literal sense. There are limited places to hide around the harbor. A more reliable approach is for the photographer to remain at a discreet distance and blend into the normal activity of the area.
It cannot be guaranteed. The harbor attracts visitors throughout the day and evening, particularly during the main tourist season.
No. The proposal point can be chosen so that the lighthouse or harbor remains part of the background without requiring the couple to stand in the busiest position.
Evening light can work very well, but the exact proposal time should be planned for the date of the proposal and should leave enough light for photographs afterward.
Yes. After the proposal, the session can continue around the waterfront and lighthouse with relaxed portraits and ring photographs.
