June 1, 2025 • Stalos Beach, Chania, Crete
A sunset proposal at Stalos Beach with a private picnic setup, discreet coordination and time to enjoy the evening together after the surprise.
Euan planned his proposal to Imogen around a simple idea: a quiet evening by the sea, with enough privacy for the surprise and a place where they could stay together afterward rather than immediately leaving once she said yes.
Stalos Beach, just west of Chania, provided an accessible seaside setting with open views toward the evening light.
For this proposal, the location was only part of the plan. Maria and I prepared a styled picnic area on the sand and coordinated the timing so that Euan and Imogen could arrive naturally without revealing what was waiting for them.
A proposal with a setup requires two plans to work at the same time.
The first is the couple’s route: Euan needed to know where to walk with Imogen and where the proposal would happen without making the evening feel rehearsed.
The second is the setup itself. It needed to be prepared before they arrived, positioned where it would work with the beach and evening light, and remain separate from the actual proposal point so that Imogen would not immediately understand what was happening.
Maria helped prepare and manage the setup while I positioned myself for the proposal.
Once Euan and Imogen reached the agreed area, the photography could begin from a distance without interrupting the surprise.
With Imogen facing the sea, Euan moved into position behind her and took out the ring.
When she turned around, he was already on one knee.
Her reaction unfolded naturally — surprise first, followed by emotion, laughter and the moment she realised what he had planned.
After the proposal, we photographed a short series of portraits along the shoreline while the light continued to soften.
They then returned to the picnic setup and were able to sit together by the sea, giving the evening somewhere to continue after the proposal itself rather than turning the experience into only a few minutes in front of a camera.
From Euan’s proposal and Imogen’s reaction to their sunset portraits and the picnic waiting for them beside the sea.
When a beach proposal includes a romantic setup, one of the most important planning decisions is whether the setup should be the place where the proposal happens or the place where the couple celebrates afterward.
Both approaches can work, but they create very different experiences.
If the proposal happens directly at a decorated setup, the visual impact is immediate. It can be ideal when the decorations themselves are meant to be part of the surprise, but it also means that the person being proposed to may understand what is happening before the actual question is asked.
A second approach is to separate the proposal from the celebration.
The couple can arrive naturally, walk beside the sea and reach an agreed proposal point first. The styled area then becomes something they discover or enjoy after the proposal.
This was the approach used for Euan and Imogen.
Separating the two moments helped preserve the surprise while still giving them the experience of a romantic beach setup afterward. It also created a natural progression: proposal, first reactions, portraits and finally time together at the picnic.
The setup therefore had a purpose beyond decoration. It extended the evening and gave them somewhere to enjoy the engagement after the photography of the proposal itself was complete.
Yes. Stalos can work well for couples staying in or around Chania because it is accessible and offers a long seaside setting. The exact section of beach and timing still matter, especially during the busier summer months.
Yes. Euan and Imogen’s proposal included a styled picnic area prepared before they arrived, giving them somewhere to relax together after the proposal.
Not necessarily. Keeping the proposal point separate from the decorated area can help preserve the surprise. The setup can then become part of the celebration afterward.
Yes, but an open beach provides limited physical hiding places. Planning the couple’s route and the photographer’s position in advance is usually more reliable than trying to remain completely hidden.
The proposal should normally happen before the exact sunset time. This leaves enough light for the proposal itself, the reactions and portraits before the light fades.
Yes. After the initial reactions, the session can continue with relaxed portraits along the beach and photographs around the setup.
