Archie contacted us while planning a surprise proposal to Monica during their trip from the United States to Crete.
He wanted the experience to feel personal and relaxed, with discreet photography and enough time afterward for a short couple session. The proposal did not include a decorative setup. The focus was the surprise itself, the open shoreline and the evening light.
Aposelemis Beach was selected because its long stretch of sand offered more space than the organised beaches around Hersonissos. The location also allowed Archie and Monica to walk naturally toward the proposal area without the evening feeling like a formal photoshoot.
The coordination took place remotely before the proposal. We agreed on the location, arrival time, general walking route and the section of the beach where Archie would stop.
We arrived early and remained discreet while waiting for them. Because Aposelemis is an open beach, the plan did not depend on a photographer hiding behind vegetation or a structure. Instead, the photography began from a distance as Archie and Monica reached the selected area.
The proposal was timed before the light disappeared so that the surprise and the photographs afterward could both take place without rushing.
As the beach became quieter and the light softened, Archie stopped beside the sea and proposed to Monica.
Her reaction was immediate and emotional. After the first moments together, they remained near the shoreline before continuing with a relaxed portrait session.
We photographed the ring, their reactions and a walk along the beach as the sky changed toward sunset. The session remained simple and unforced, allowing the photographs to follow the experience rather than interrupt it.

An open beach may appear easy for a surprise proposal, but it presents a specific photography challenge. There are often no walls, trees or architectural features that allow a photographer to remain completely hidden.
The more reliable approach is to plan the couple’s route and the photographer’s position in advance. The person proposing needs to know where to walk and approximately where to stop, while the photographer must remain far enough away not to attract attention but close enough to record the reactions clearly.
Timing is equally important. The proposal should usually happen before the exact sunset time. This leaves enough light for the surprise itself, the first reactions, ring photographs and a short portrait session afterward.
Aposelemis Beach works well for this approach because its long shoreline provides space to create distance from other visitors. Complete privacy cannot be guaranteed on a public beach, but selecting the correct section and time can make the moment feel considerably more personal.
The success of Archie and Monica’s proposal came from keeping the plan simple. A clear route, discreet positioning and appropriate timing allowed the experience to unfold without complicated signals or staged movements.
